One Man on a Mission: Cook & Rate Every Dish from History out of 10
Donnie Dodson is the creator behind Eats History, a passionate storyteller who explores the past not through textbooks or lectures, but through the food that shaped it. He makes it clear that he’s not a historian, and he’s not a professional chef.
But what he brings to the table is something more: an unmatched obsession with telling history and culture through a culinary lens. Through food, he tells the stories of empires, revolutions, forgotten rulers, and everyday people just like us in a way that feels tangible, entertaining, and unexpectedly emotional.

The mission was bold from the start. Donnie set out to cook and rate every dish out of 10 from recorded history, one bite at a time. It was ambitious, and impossible, but he figured someone had to try. He kicked things off with George Washington’s hoecakes and posted the video with little expectation. By the next morning, the internet had spoken. People were hooked. The comment section lit up with requests, reactions, and followers eager to see what dish would come next.
What began as a casual experiment quickly turned into a viral sensation. As of summer 2025, Eats History has grown to over 2.1 million followers across TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. Donnie’s short-form videos breathe life into ancient recipes and presidential favorites, exploring food from every corner of history. Each video is a quick dive into a moment in time which is served with context, a rating out of 10, and a lot of heart and history. It’s a history class where you can smell the food and taste the past.
Eats History has since expanded into new formats. Donnie now produces longer-form historical documentary recipe videos on Youtube, as well as hosting Talks History with Donnie Dodson, a podcast where he explores longer-form historical themes, stories, and ideas that still resonate today. He’s also in the process of writing his first hardcover cookbook, Roman Recipes, which is set for publication in 2027. The book is a love letter to Ancient Roman culinary traditions, with real recipes, vivid stories, and a clear goal to make history feel personal and real, one dish at a time.
Along the way, Donnie and Eats History have been featured on BBC Radio, numerous regional and international media outlets, and a wide variety of podcasts and publications. The platform has also partnered with brands like Hexclad, Graza, and Amazon Prime Video. These collaborations reflect the growing impact of Donnie’s work and the surprising reach of one simple idea: that food is one of the most powerful ways to connect people with their past.
